eBay’s new terms declare “checkouts are strictly for human users” while its CEO tests agentic shopping experiences. Amazon sued Perplexity’s shopping agent as a trespasser while its own Buy for Me agent checks out uninvited on other merchants’ sites. The platforms don’t object to AI agents — they object to agents they don’t control. On allegiance-based gatekeeping, and what conduct-based verification should look like instead.
